9.3 million concurrent viewers, and not a single packet lost.



By the end of June, we received a call from Jesús García, production manager at TBS – Tech Brands Stories: they had an event, and the client was looking for AWS Elemental 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 encoders.

The ”client” were 2 engineers at Twitch: Ollie Humphreys and Eduard Francu, which came from UK and Germany to coordinate the streaming of 𝗜𝗯𝗮𝗶 𝗟𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘀’ 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗩.

The challenge was huge: their estimation was to double the figures of 2024, when 3,8 million concurrent viewers were reached.

A month ago, few people could have guessed that the event would reach more than 𝟵 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 concurrent viewers, far surpassing Twitch’s previous world record.

We don’t own Elemental Live encoders, but we offered other options: AWS Elemental 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀, Epiphan Video 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹 2, Osprey Video 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻 etc. After some thought, a concrete plan was established: the main encoder would be an Intinor AB 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗸𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿, provided by SOBATECH GROUP SL, and we would bring a couple of 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝟮 as the secondary and tertiary encoding options. Each encoder would have independent internet access: several 1-Gbps FTTH lines provided by Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales

𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁 also provided all the AWS infraestructure (𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 and 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲) which provided failover mechanisms and transcoded the feeds.

Once on site, there were some last minute changes: one of our Epiphan Pearl 2 was set as the primary encoder, a SNG truck was added as a backup for the fibers and enbex kindly supplied a Peplink 𝗠𝗕𝗫 router with 6 WANs (3 x fiber and 3 x cellular) as the backhaul of the Intinor encoder.

The event had lots of planning, some challenges and a few last minute problems, but the streaming worked impeccably: none of the backup systems had to take over, not a single packet lost, and the CDNs were able to cope with several peaks of 8 and 9 million concurrent viewers.
