SRT is a solid streaming protocol, but it doesn’t fit in the “ultra-low latency” category, whereas WebRTC or QUIC do.
Cloudflare, as other platforms like Dolby.io and AWS Interactive Video Service, offers WebRTC ingest and egress capabilities through the W𝗛𝗜𝗣 (WebRTC HTTP Ingress Protocol) y W𝗛𝗘𝗣 (WebRTC HTTP Egress Protocol) standards.
In the last 2 or 3 years, several software and hardware options are starting to offer WebRTC WHIP encoding. Some examples are OBS and Osprey Talon 4K-SC.
Among the decoding options (not many, as far as we know), Eyevinn Technology offers a WHEP player that also decodes HLS and MPEG-DASH. Thanks Jonas Dautel for the tip 🙂
At Tera Rent, we have donde some extensive latency tests using OBS as a WHIP client, Cloudflare as a server and Eyevinn Player as a WHEP decoder. Interested in the results?
Check some of them in the following video. More coming soon.
